Value chain promotion
Strengthening value chains in favour of poorer players is the objective of IC Pakistan which is carried out by analyzing the whole sector/subsector at three levels including micro, meso and macro. The Business Interest Groups (BIGs) of small producers and collectors formed at very gross root level were further organized in the form of Business Associations. The Business Associations strengthened the smaller actors (poor producers) in the value chain which has given them the power to better compete and negotiate for their due rights. Developing the business capacities and facilitating them through viable business plan has rationalized their business operations. Market information and linkages with potential markets enabled them to fetch maximum premium for their products and services of value addition. IC promoted value chains of pine nut, lemon grass and black persimmon besides some other income generating activities for poor women and men. These include sewing, producing yarn and fabric using hand looms, honey bee keeping by poor households and packaging and labeling walnut kernels. The de-mortgaging of walnut trees in Birir also supported the poor families in enhancing their family income sufficiently. The income increase in the value chains of cut flower, wild Pomegranate (anardana) and Zizyphus honey considerable contributed to the livelihoods of the people involved.
