Value chain promotion

Strengthening value chains in favour of poorer players is the objective of IC Pakistan which is carried out by analyzing the whole sector/subsector at three levels including micro, meso and macro. The Business Interest Groups (BIGs) of small producers and collectors formed at very gross root level were further organized in the form of Business Associations. The Business Associations strengthened the smaller actors (poor producers) in the value chain which has given them the power to better compete and negotiate for their due rights. Developing the business capacities and facilitating them through viable business plan has rationalized their business operations. Market information and linkages with potential markets enabled them to fetch maximum premium for their products and services of value addition. IC promoted value chains of pine nut, lemon grass and black persimmon besides some other income generating activities for poor women and men. These include sewing, producing yarn and fabric using hand looms, honey bee keeping by poor households and packaging and labeling walnut kernels. The de-mortgaging of walnut trees in Birir also supported the poor families in enhancing their family income sufficiently. The income increase in the value chains of cut flower, wild Pomegranate (anardana) and Zizyphus honey considerable contributed to the livelihoods of the people involved.

Helvetas and Intercooperation merger

On 1st July 2011 – the two organizations merged to become one with a new corporate name “Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation HSI”. Both the organizations have a collective work experience of more than 80 years, hence a rich set of experiences is being merged to pool all the competences for a more effective well-being of people.

Helvetas was founded in 1955 as the first private organisation for development co-operation in Switzerland. Helvetas is a denominationally and politically independent association, supported by approximately 38,000 members, more than 40,000 sponsors and 15 regional volunteer groups. With 18 partner countries, Helvetas currently operates in Africa, Asia – including Central Asia  and the Caucasus – and Latin America.

In case of Pakistan, the merger initially arrives with a change of name since Helvetas is not presently working in the country. The organization will enrich itself for combining its forces against poverty and  or gaining more competences.
